Mexican Chocolate Elixir

Standard

So I’m prepping for a yoga and chocolate tasting workshop that I’m going to lead next week (wanna come?) and I remembered this amazing drinking chocolate that I had in Santa Fe last summer. If you are ever there, be sure to check out Kakawa Chocolate House. It’s super cool. They have a ton of different chocolate elixirs to choose from and you can taste any one of them first…which of course, I did. And don’t you just love the word ELIXIR. Makes me think I’m drinking something magical and healing sent down from the Mayan gods.

They have all kinds of interesting flavors added to the drinking chocolate including ancho chile, lavender, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange and rose to name a few. Some of the drinks are a little more bitter because of the higher cacoa content of the chocolate used and others are sweeter. For this recipe, I stuck with a traditional Mexican flavor combination using almonds, cinnamon and Mexican vanilla.

Little Lemon Tarts

When life gives you lemons…I say make lemon tarts. That is, raw, vegan, gluten-free, amazingly delicious, lemon tarts. I found this recipe on a blog, just randomly search for lemony ideas. It’s a knock off of the Hail Mary Meyer Lemon Miracle Tart. I love this brand when I’m in the mood for a little treat.

Last week, it got a little cold here in Houston, we had a hard freeze and everything. So, I decided that I better harvest the last remaining lemons from the Meyer lemon tree in my backyard. I love this tree. It produces the most wonderful, juicy lemons. I treasure every single one.

FYG DIY…made with ❤

Heart-made gifts are my absolute very favorite. I have every pinch pot my boys ever made. Every ornament made out of popsicle sticks. Every picture frame made out of popsicle sticks, too, come to think of it. I live for this kind of thing. So when the holidays roll around, I like to make a little something special for friends and/or family that comes from my heart.

This year, I was inspired by a few diy crafts at the Toyota booth (yes, I’m giving them a shout out…we are a two Prius family) at Wanderlust in Austin about a month ago. They had tables where you made your own mat spray and body scrub. I also threw together some bath salt, which is ridiculously easy.

Goji Berry Chocolate Granola

How is it even remotely possible that I have been writing this blog for nearly six months and I am just now posting a granola recipe? I mean come on…yoga + granola…it just sort of goes. Don’t ya think?

I love having homemade granola in the house. It’s so easy to make and the variations are endless. The inspiration for this recipe came from a recent trip to my local health food/homeopathic store called the Natural Kitchen. Such a cool little shop. I’m amazed by how much they pack into this tiny little storefront. But I always seem to find exactly what I need whenever I stop in.

Cherry Almond Prana Bars

Think of this as a little gift to yourself. A healthy snack that you can take with you when you’re on the run and need a little pick-me-up. Great for before or after yoga or any activity for that matter. Nice for kids lunches, too.

In yoga, prana is life energy that is connected to our breath. In Light on Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar says, “Prana means breath, respiration, life, vitality, wind, energy or strength. It also connotes the soul as opposed to the body.” So it’s probably some kind of blasphemy to call this recipe “prana bars,” but if Mr. Iyengar tasted these, I bet he’d forgive me.

The recipe could not be any easier. Throw healthy stuff in a food processor. Shape the mixture into bars — that’s pretty much it.
